The Shepherd Psalms

Posted By at Wednesday, January 09, 2019

I was sharing at a funeral for a 90+ year old member of the church on Monday morning. He had specifically requested me, some 10 years ago, way back in 2008 when he was in his early 80’s what he wanted me to share at his funeral, as he wanted to be prepared and ready. It was a delight to officiate at his funeral because he knew the Great Shepherd.

For those of you who are not regular Word people or Bible readers; Psalm 23 is right in the middle of three SPECIFIC PSALMS written by David the shepherd boy who defeated the giant Goliath and eventually became King of Israel. The three Psalms are all prophetically speaking about Jesus who came to earth in a three-phase ministry. He came as a Prophet, He now is our Great High Priest but He’s coming back as the King of Kings. That’s all in Psalms 22, 23 & 24.

Psalm 22 is about the GOOD SHEPHERD who gave his life for the sheep. It is now PAST TENSE; it has already happened! [See John 10:11 and Matthew 27:46!]

Psalm 23 is about the GREAT SHEPHERD who cares for the sheep in His pasture; that is the Church. [See Hebrews 13:20]

Psalm 24 is about the CHIEF SHEPHERD who is coming again as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. [See 1 Peter 5:4]

If you don’t know the GOOD Shepherd of Psalm 22 who died for you and as you and in your place, then you can’t know the provision of the GREAT Shepherd of Psalm 23 who NOW is your Shepherd and is providing all your needs right now, and you won’t know the reality of the CHIEF Shepherd when He comes again to catch away the church and hand out the crown of life. So are you ready for his coming?

Psalm 23:1 The Lord IS my shepherd; I shall not want.

I shall not be in WANT for anything

Psalm 23:2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;

I shall not want for REST

Psalm 23:2 He leads me beside the still waters.

I shall not want for REFRESHMENT

Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul;

I shall not want for RESTORATION or refurbishment or renewal that all happens when we come to Jesus.

Psalm 23:3 He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

I shall not want for RIGHT DIRECTION and GUIDANCE. Jesus give us His righteousness.

Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;

I shall have no fear of death, BECAUSE IT IS JUST A SHADOW and the shadow of a big dog can’t bite.

Psalm 23:4 For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

I shall not want for COMFORT, He keeps me on track.

Psalm 23:5-6 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

I shall not want for NOURISHMENT and PROVISION He has taken care of all my needs.

Psalm 23:6 You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

I shall not want for the ANOINTING, it is the anointing that destroys the yoke of bondage.

Psalm 23:5 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;

I shall not want for God’s GOODNESS and MERCY it’s following me every day of my life.

Psalm 23:6 And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

I shall not want for an ASSURANCE of my ETERNAL DESTINY because I KNOW the Shepherd!

Do you know Him?
