Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so.
The Bible compares our life and mind to the construction of a building.
1 Cor 3:9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
Each believer is united to Christ and in Christ with all other Christians to form the church.
The Bible also compares the church to a building.
Eph 2:22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
When men begin to build a building, they must first lay a solid foundation. God uses this natural building principle to teach us the spiritual truth that to be a strong spiritual building for God we must have the proper foundation. Jesus is the Master builder and the Bible is His builders plan.
1 Cor 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
1 Cor 3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
The spiritual foundation God speaks about is all based on His Word and it is a good foundation.
2 Tim 2:19 Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness."
1 Tim 6:19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
It is based on righteousness and is eternal.
Prov 10:25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.
God chose Jesus as the foundation for our spiritual life.
Isaiah 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.”
So the foundation of our spiritual life is not some man-made idea like a denomination or some rite, the foundation IS Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 3:11-13 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
Your foundation is very important.
Psalm 11:3 When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?
One of the most popular destinations in Italy is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Over the course of centuries, the tower progressively listed five and a half degrees out of vertical and was at imminent risk for collapse. Apartments and houses downwind were evacuated. The tower was closed to the public in 1990. The tower was unstable from the very beginning of its 199 year construction, due to being built on a soft unstable foundation. Uncounted millions were spent to arrest the subsidence of the 185-foot marble structure. It reopened to the public again in 2001.
Our lives are subject to a similar sinking and tilting, if they are built on the soft sands of secular materialism, only in this case there are potential consequences lasting for all eternity.
Our spirits will be some place for an eternity. It’s up to us to decide where we want to live in that eternity, it depends on what kind of foundations we want to build our lives upon today.
What are you building your foundations on today?
