Meditating God's Word - Out In On!

Posted By at Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Many Christians read their Bibles and pray, but are they really meditating on God’s Word? And do they understand what this means?

The Lord called Joshua to lead Israel after Moses’ death. In Joshua 1:8 he told him, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.”

The Lord wanted to fill Joshua’s heart with the Word so he would know precisely what to do and how to lead the people according to God’s standards and God's commands. That’s exactly what He wants to do in our lives as well. If we’ll meditate on Scripture, the Lord will unfold His truths and His instructions to us.

To meditate on God's Word we must do at least three things; I've said it like this: Out, In, On!

* Shut OUT the world.

That means no to television, iPhones and iPads etc. or other outside distractions.

* Shut yourselves IN with God.

Meditation is not a group activity but a private time alone with the Lord.

* Focus your attention ON a passage of Scripture.

This is not just a casual reading time of God’s Word but a D & M [deep and meaningful] private conversation with the Lord.

Begin by asking God to reveal what He wants to say to you. Then listen for His instructions and guidance while reading, thinking and praying about the passage.

Then there are the 4 'P's!

  1. Priority - The devil will always try to thwart our efforts to focus on God’s Word because he knows we are absorbing it into our souls and spirit. If meditation is not a priority in your lives, you probably won’t even do it.
  2. Place - Find a private place to meet alone with God; not in the family room with the TV going and other family members talking.
  3. Purpose - The purpose of meditation is to commune with and hear from the Lord. When we concentrate on His Word and seek His guidance, He sometimes uses very specific passages of Scriptures to answer our requests. Once we’ve understood what He’s revealed, our trust in Him increases and our worries start to abate.
  4. Plan - We must plan to set aside regular time to meet with the Lord privately to read His Word, ask for direction and to listen for His voice. This opportunity to be alone with Him soon becomes the most precious part of each day as we learn to know almighty God more intimately, and hear Him speak to us personally through Scripture.

This is what meditation is all about!

Obedience is the Fountain For a Life of Blessing

Posted By at Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Luke 11:28 Blessed rather are those hear the Word of God and keep it!

John 13:17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them!

Job 36:11 NLT If they listen and obey God, they will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives. All their years will be pleasant.

Obedience to God's Word unlocks the keys to all blessings in our lives. It gives us the ability to walk in the fullness of Abraham's promised blessings. To obey God means that we do all that God tells us to do, by His Spirit and by His Word. Then, as we obey His written Word and heed to the leading of the Holy Spirit, the end result is that God will make us the head and not the tail.

2 Peter 1:10 Wherefore the rather brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if you do these things you shall never fall.

James, the earthly brother of Jesus, said not to be just a hearer of the Word, but a doer of the Word in James 1:22. But we don't just listen to God's word. We must do what it says. Otherwise, we are only fooling ourselves.

James said that if we love Jesus, we should obey Him.

The prophet Samuel said in First Samuel 15:22 NLT of the Old Testament; 'But Samuel replied, "What is more pleasing to the LORD, your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams."'

Obeying God is a day-to-day act of walking in faith and following His Word. The Holy Spirit will prompt you in many ways that may seem small, but as you obey His voice, you will learn to hear more clearly and gain confidence to step out in faith.

Jesus said in Luke 6:47 "Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a wise man who digged deep and builds his house on the rock..."

In Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.

Love is based on obedience, not how we feel, but on what we do. Our faith only works by our love.

Galatians 5:6 For in Christ neither circumcision avails anything nor un-circumcision but faith that works by love!

Obedience is the only standard of measure of our love in God's reckoning. Obedience energizes our hearts with faith. Obedience causes us to do the very things Satan fears we will do, such as spending time with God, studying the Word and learning to listen to the Word being taught at church.

We may know the basics of God's will, and obey His Word by living a righteous and moral life, but there are specifics to His plan for our lives that can only be found through time spent with Him in prayer, reading the Word and listening to what He says through the pastoral teaching. Priority one is being obedient to make time for Him in our everyday lives above other pursuits that bring us pleasure and relaxation; such as, films, sports etc.

What many do not realize is that there is a high cost to disobedience.

It takes only a moment’s reflection to realize that the cost of disobedience has been high. The world as we know it is not the good world God originally created, nor do we human beings resemble the image of God in which we were first made. Tragically, that image has been tarnished and the world is filled with sin, sorrow, and suffering.

The “break” from God's plan began with one act of disobedience by our first parents in the Garden of Eden. By a deliberate choice that was rooted in pride and unbelief, they acted in defiance of God’s revealed will. Their self-centered drive for autonomy to manage their own lives apart from God, was passed down to every human being ever since. That is why we must be born again and choose to obey God's Word every day.

Just Believe God!

Posted By at Wednesday, June 13, 2018

Acts 27:25 NLT So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said.

Paul was on his way to Rome when he said this, and he was in a great storm. Perhaps you are in a storm this week, I pray you can learn some lessons from this study and just believe God.

a. Disobedience can cause a storm!

God used Paul to warn the owner of the ship about the coming storm, but he refused to listen. His disobedience cost him dearly; he lost his ship, his cargo and almost lost his life. We need to learn that our disobedience to God's Word can cost us our health, our family, our finances, our career and almost as certainly our life.

b. Everyone probably faces a storm at sometime!

You may be in a storm today but you are not alone, God knows what you are facing and He can send His angels to watch over you.

Acts 27:23-24 For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, 24 and he said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What’s more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.’ 25 So take courage!

c. God is on your side so you will be fine!

Even though Paul was a prisoner and bound in chains; he actually had more authority than the captain. He was freer in his captivity because he was on a mission for God the creator.

Isaiah 54:17 NLT But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord their vindication will come from me I the Lord, have spoken!

Don't let the storm faze you; you are safe IN the storm just don’t let it get IN you!

The devil is busy!

Posted By at Wednesday, June 06, 2018

I'm sure you have often heard the expression, "The devil finds things for idle hands to do."

Have you ever had some time off from work and thought, "I'm going to relax and just watch TV for a little while?"

But as soon as one program is over, you decide to watch one more program and before you know it, you have wasted a whole evening.

Most of us can probably relate to this! There's nothing wrong with relaxing, but often those times when we have nothing to do are the times we can get into trouble. When boredom sets in, we become a target for the devil.

In Proverbs, chapters five through seven, it is dealing with a young man who gets into sexual promiscuity. One portion of the story describes the man as sauntering through the streets. The Hebrew brings this out. Then the young man's mind begins to wander and think about what was happening on the other side of town. Eventually, he finds himself involved with a prostitute who brought about his destruction. All of this began with boredom in the man's life.

Proverbs 16:3 "Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established."

That means take God into your works as your partner, then they will succeed. As soon as we wake up and our day begins, we should commit our works to the Lord, and verbally invite Him into partnership with us for that day's work. Because when our works are committed to the Lord, our thoughts will follow and be established. We should aim to begin our day like this every day.

This is because the devil attacks mainly in the thought realm.

That's why Paul instructs us to renew our minds.

Rom 12:2 Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

The Word of God and the Holy Spirit already dwell in our spirit. So real growth comes from the renewing of the mind and our thoughts becoming established in the things of God.

Philippians 4:8 "...whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things."

Proverbs 23:7 As a man thinks in his heart so is he.

Isaiah 55:9 God's thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways.

To understand that statement you must read verses 7 & 8 to see whom the Lord is talking to!

Isa 55:7-8 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," saith the Lord.

In these verses God is talking to the unrighteous and the wicked. So if you are born-again that is not you He's talking to!

So how do we attain God's thoughts?

It's not only by studying His Word; it's also by committing our works to the Lord each day.

What about your works today? Are you looking for ways to get out of work and have a few more moments of leisure time?

Or are you really looking for ways to fill up your day working with The Lord to expand His kingdom?
